How to manipulate Twitter, or a #gehaktwalrus a day keeps the boredom at bay

Bored, no? So yesterday I was lurking on the internet, and I saw a recent tweet of the Dutch columnist Sylvia Witteman I follow on Twitter. Apparently it was her birthday, and she wanted a trending topic on Twitter as a present from her followers. Sylvia being Sylvia, she chose the word #gehaktwalrus, which roughly translates as #mincedmeatwalrus, as the new trending topic. Why? Because it’s fun! And yes, it worked: in less than 45 minutes the #gehaktwalrus was a trending topic in the Netherlands. And it’s still trending… silly people! :’D
